Notice of Vacancy – EDA

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY is accepting applications for a vacancy
on the board. It is preferred that applicant be a resident of the Town. Appointee is subject to
completion of a state of economic interest form and take an oath of office prescribed by Code of
Virginia, 1950, as amended, Section 49-1.

Notice of Vacancies – VHSBI and HPRB

Virginia Highlands Small Business Incubator is seeking a member to fill an expired
term. Interested persons may be subject to completion of a statement of economic interest form
and may not miss more than three (3) meetings during a 12-month period of service.

Historic Preservation Review Board is seeking a member to fill an expired term. It is
preferred that the applicant be a resident, a qualified voter and demonstrate an interest, competence
or knowledge in historic preservation. The Board meets the first Wednesday each month at 5:15
pm in the Arthur Campbell Room at the Town municipal building, 133 West Main Street.
Interested persons is required to attend at least one informational or education meeting per year,
approved by the state department of historic resources as pertaining to the work and function of
the Board.

Notice Regarding Letter of Interest for Council Vacancy – Submission Deadline Extended

SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED

TO WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2020

Pursuant to the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended, § 24.2-226 & 228(A), the Town Council of the Town of Abingdon is currently accepting a letter of interest for an interim vacancy on the Town Council. All candidates for the position must be Abingdon residents and registered voters in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Selected candidate(s) will be interviewed by a Council Committee, with a recommended candidate considered by the Town Council at the August 3, 2020 meeting. The Town Council will petition the Circuit Court for a special election to be held in May 2021 for persons interested in completing the remainder of the unexpired term and said candidate, if elected, will serve from May 2021 through June 30, 2022.

The successful interim council member must be willing to submit an annual statement of economic interest, take an oath of office before a proper court official, and attend a training and orientation program for new council members, which is administered by the Virginia Municipal League.

Interested persons for the interim council vacancy should submit a letter of interest in a sealed envelope to Kim Kingsley, Town Clerk, Town of Abingdon, P.O. Box 789, Abingdon, Virginia 24212, or it may be hand-delivered to the 3rd Floor of Town Hall at 133 West Main Street, Abingdon. Letter of interest will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on July 10, 2020 July 15, 2020. Please note that Town Council reserves the right to select a person from among all registered voters within the town, and, as such, is not bound to choose from among only those who submitted formal letters of interest for the interim position.

Town of Abingdon – Facilities Closure and Services Update

The Town of Abingdon is taking several measures to support the goal of protecting the well-being of our community, and the capacity of our overall healthcare system. Effective May 26, 2020, many offices, including Town Hall and the Police Department, will be open to the public; however, some Town facilities will remain closed until further notice. Below is an update on Town facilities and services.

 – Town Hall is open but customers may continue to use the following methods for transactions such as paying sewer bills or taxes:

o   U.S. Mail

o   Online – www.abingdon-va.gov/online-bill-pay

o   Credit card via telephone: (276) 525-1464

o   Dropbox located at the front of Town Hall

·       There is a “dropbox” located outside the first floor of Town Hall for patrons to submit business licenses, building permits, and other items to the Planning and Public Works Departments. Other services (such as applications for permits, licenses, and applications for utility services) may be negotiated by use of telephone or e-mail communication. Many forms can be downloaded from our website www.abingdon-va.gov (and identified using the search tool).

·       Tourism offices, at 335 Cummings Street, will continue to serve visitors by phone and e-mail only. The building is closed to the public. You may contact the office via phone at 276-676-2282 or e-mail at acvb@abingdon-va.gov.

·       The Muster Grounds, at 1780 Muster Place, is closed to the public until further notice. You may contact the office via phone at 276-525-1050.

·       Public parks and playground facilities are open under normal operating conditions as long as patrons remain compliant with appropriate social distancing guidelines.
